Originally I was going to call this “If mom could only speak”, however since most of her conversation these days is jumbled with non-sequiturs, Godbye Hello seemed a more fitting title. Apologies to Lennon and McCartney for reversing their song title.

Goodbye Hello

Goodbye, hello who are you? And thanks for dropping by.
Excuse me as I stare at walls, I wish that I could die.

You tell me that I am not the same, imagine how I feel.
Trapped inside a body that can’t determine what is real.

Goodbye to all the ones I Love, with words I’ll never say.
Hello to all the life I lived, I slowly fade away.
Goodbye to conversation, Goodbye Hello because.
Hello to what I am today, Goodbye to what I was.

The Words to “I Am The Walrus”, now all make sense to me.
My thoughts and words cannot connect, that’s how it has to be.

Some say it’s dementia, some Alzheimer’s disease.
Frankly I am feeling fine, so many locks… no keys.

Goodbye to all the ones I Love, with words I’ll never say.
Hello to all the life I lived, I slowly fade away.
Goodbye to conversation, Goodbye Hello because.
Hello to what I am today, Goodbye to what I was.

You tell me I’m your mother, I have grandkids too?
Step into my world and tell me what to do.

My brain is slowly melting, new thoughts at a halt.
My memory of you is gone, but that is not your fault.

Goodbye to all the ones I Love, with words I’ll never say.
Hello to all the life I lived, I slowly fade away.
Goodbye to conversation, Goodbye Hello because.
Hello to what I am today, Goodbye to what I was.

You play a little music, from somewhere in my youth.
I smile, but can’t distinguish, the fantasy from truth.

So thank you for your visit, can you tell me why.
Your happy when you come here, but when you leave you cry.

Goodbye to all the ones I Love, with words I’ll never say.
Hello to all the life I lived, I slowly fade away.
Goodbye to conversation, Goodbye Hello because.
Hello to what I am today, Goodbye to what I was.

I’m back in school, I drive a car, images meander.
You claim I just talk gibberish, as I hear perfect candor.

My eyes can’t see, my ears can’t hear but I am doing fine.
My wheel chair can’t reach the table, nurses help me dine.

Goodbye to all the ones I Love, with words I’ll never say.
Hello to all the life I lived, I slowly fade away.
Goodbye to conversation, Goodbye Hello because.
Hello to what I am today, Goodbye to what I was.

You tell me things I don’t recall, I just can’t place your face,
You’ve put me in this sterile home, and I don’t like this place.

Everything is working, well except my broken mind
You visit for a little while, but then I’m left behind.

Goodbye to all the ones I Love, with words I’ll never say.
Hello to all the life I lived, I slowly fade away.
Goodbye to conversation, Goodbye Hello because.
Hello to what I am today, Goodbye to what I was.

I like it when you hold my hand, I yearn for human touch.
If I ask for you to come again, am I asking for too much?

So don’t be sad each time you leave, I know a magic trick.
Cause when your gone, I sit alone and I don’t know I’m sick.

Goodbye to all the ones I Love, with words I’ll never say.
Hello to all the life I lived, I slowly fade away.
Goodbye to conversation, Goodbye Hello because.
Hello to what I am today, Goodbye to what I was.

Cue the Blong: Until I put this to music, Where Did I Go? is an homage to our older generation…

  1. Reminds me of my grandmother who spent 3 years in Extendicare with dementia. People use to say, why bother visiting her, she doesn’t remember you, yes but I remember her😥😡
